Tobias-Mayer-Museum

Tobias Mayer
der große Astronom;
gestorben als Professor an der Universität Göttingen
am 20. Februar 1762.

Tobias-Mayer-Museum

english The birthplace of the astronomer and mathematician Tobias Mayer contains in its ground-floor a museum. A tablet which can't be overlooked marks this building in the Torgasse 13 (D-71672 Marbach at Neckar) with its text:

Birthplace of
Tobias Mayer
the famous astronomer
born on February 17th, 1723 here
died in Göttingen on February 20th, 1762
as a Prof. ord. oec. et math.

At the left part of the southern front of this house there is one plaque more containing a similar text:

Here was born on February 17th, 1723
Tobias Mayer
the great astronomer
who died with the position of a Professor at the university of Göttingen
on February 20th, 1762

It remains to mention that Tobias Mayer was a predecessor of Carl Friedrich Gauß being director of the observatory of Göttingen

Pictures showing the contents of the two show-cases (curriculum vitae, a picture of Tobias Mayer as well as some information on the exhibits of the museum, the aims of the Tobias-Mayer-Museum society and a list of the reprints for sale) may be downloaded in form of a zip-archive following the link (mayert.zip). The pictures possess their original sizes, which assures the readability of the written information. The data takes about 1034 KB.

Near the entrance of the museum (cf. the last picture) there is a sundial together with two metal-tablets containing related information. Moreover a brass stripe can be recognized, which partially marks the meridian of 9º15'36" eastern longitude. It can be read on one of the tablets that a prize was awarded to Tobias Mayer three years after his death due to his work on determining longitudes.

The photographs were taken in September 2005 by my brother-in-law Joachim Rupp.
