Der Brunnen in der Platzmitte erinnert an den Humanisten und Kosmographen
Sebastian Münster
(1488-1552), der Anfang des 16. Jahrhunderts einige Jahre im hier gelegenen
Franziskanerkloster (Barfüßerkloster) wirkte.
Michael Schoenholtz schuf
den Brunnen 1978 als der Karlsplatz im Zuge des Neubaus einer Tiefgarage neu gestaltet
wurde. (Dieser Text ist einem Schaukasten auf dem Platz entnommen und wörtlich
wiedergegeben.)
Ein weiterer Schaukasten in der nordwestlichen Ecke des Platzes geht mehr auf die Ideen ein, die der Gestaltung des Brunnens zugrunde liegen. Dessen Text sei nachstehend wiedergegeben:
| Sebastian-Münster-Brunnen von Michael Schoenholtz, Berlin, 1978 Dem Brunnen auf diesem Platz liegt der Gedanke zugrunde, hier die Erinnerung an den humanistischen Gelehrten Sebastian Münster (1488/89 - 1552) wachzuhalten. Denn an dieser Stelle stand einst das Barfüßer-Kloster, in dem Münster 1521 bis 1529 als Lehrer der hebräischen Sprache und als Erforscher mathematisch-astronomischer Probleme lebte. Hier begann er mit der Weltbeschreibung, die ihn berühmt gemacht hat. Der Brunnen ist vor allem dem Kosmographen Münster gewidmet. Deshalb wird dargestellt, wie sich die vermessene Erdkugel aus den symbolhaften Planetenbahnen heraushebt. Auf der Erde findet man die Menschen in unterschiedlichen Situationen, Positionen und Aktionen, die das Leben bestimmen: Geburt und Tod, technischer Fortschritt im positiven wie zerstörerischen Sinne sowie das Annehmen und Ablehnen der irdischen Gegebenheiten. |
Auf dem Bild ist das Gebäude der Heidelberger Akademie der Wissenschaften zu erkennen; weiter oben ist teilweise das Heidelberger Schloss zu sehen.

The well in the center of the place commemorates to the humanist and cosmographer
Sebastian Münster
(1488-1552). He worked and teached several years at the monastery of the Order of
St. Francis in the beginning of the 16th century.
Michael Schoenholtz created
this well in 1978 while this place Karlsplatz was redecorated in the process of
building a new underground car park.
A showcase in the northwestern corner of this place informs on the ideas for this well. Its text reads like:
| Sebastian-Münster-Brunnen from Michael Schoenholtz, Berlin, 1978 The idea for the well on this place is to commemorate to the humanistic savant Sebastian Münster (1488/89 - 1552). At this place there was the monastery of the Order of St. Francis in former times. Münster teached Hebrew and investigated problems of mathematics and astronomy in the period 1521 up to 1529. Here he started his work on describing the world which made him wellknown. The well is primarily devoted to the cosmographer Münster. It presents the surveyed terrestrial globe lifted out from the symbolized planetary orbits. On the Earth there are several persons in different situations, positions and actions determining their lifes: Birth and death, technical progress in its positive sense but also destroying manner as well as the acceptance and rejection of worldly circumstances. |
