Bougainvillea named after Louis Antoine de Bougainville on Mahé (Seychelles)

Es kommt eher selten vor, dass eine Pflanze nach einem Mathematiker benannt wird. Nun ja, die Namensgebung "Bougainvillea" für eine zur Gattung der Wunderblumengewächse (Nyctaginaceae) zählende Zierpflanze durch den mitgereisten Arzt und Naturforscher Philibert Commerson ist sicher auf die Bedeutung von Louis Antoine de Bougainville als Kapitän und erstem französischen Weltumsegler zurückzuführen und weniger auf die Publikation seines Buchs über Integralrechnung Traité du calcul -intégral (1752). Um diesen Sachverhalt rankt sich eine Legende¹⁾.

Das oben abgelichtete Exemplar einer Bougainvillea wurde im sogenannten Jardin du Roi²⁾ auf der Seychelleninsel Mahé fotografiert.

²⁾ Der Jardin du Roi (deutsch: Garten des Königs) wurde ursprünglich im 18. Jahrhundert angelegt, um die Möglichkeit des Gewürzanbaus auf den Seychellen zu testen. Die heutige Plantage ist an einem anderen als dem ursprünglichen Ort angelegt und beherbergt zahlreiche exotische Nutzpflanzen. (Zurück zum Bezug)

It may happen rather rarely that a plant is named after a mathematician. The name "Bougainvillea" for a flowering plant was chosen by the French Botanist Philibert Commerson who accompanied Louis Antoine de Bougainville on his circumnavigation.¹⁾ It looks obvious that this naming was done due to the importance as Navy admiral and not due to the publication of a book on integral calculus with the title Traité du calcul -intégral (1752).

The bush of genus Bougainvillea shown above grows in the so-called Jardin du Roi²⁾ on Mahé island (Seychelles).
