Gedenktafel für Michael Stifel in der Lutherstadt Wittenberg (Deutschland) /
Commemorative plaque with respect to Michael Stifel in Wittenberg (Germany)

Gedenktafel fuer Michael Stifel /
Plaque for Michael Stifel

Michael Stifel
(1487 - 1567)
Theologe, Mathematiker
hier 1533 in Schutzhaft

Gedenktafel fuer Abraham Vater /
Plaque for Abraham Vater

english The front-side of the building whose address is "Schlossstraße 15" shows a plaque commemorating to Michael Stifel. M. Stifel announced the end of the world for October 19th, 1533 (see also: well in Annaburg). Thereafter he was taken in protective custody here in Wittenberg.

The text of the plaque may be translated as follows:

Michael Stifel
(1487 - 1567)
theologian, mathematician
taken in protective custody here in 1533

At the eastern end of the same building there is a commemorative plaque referring to Abraham Vater. He was a well-known physician but is also mentioned as a mathematician here.

The text of the plaque reads as follows:

Abraham Vater
(1684 - 1751)
physician, mathematician
university professor

In [1] most of the plaques are described and information about the personages are provided. But it must be mentioned that in that description on page 107 the denotation "mathematician" is replaced by the concept "anatomist"! Hence it looks being a good idea not to refer to A. Vater as a mathematician. Also in the list of professors for mathematics at Leucorea (University of Wittenberg) his name is still missing.

Below a total view of the building with the plaques is shown. At the right partially the All Saints' Church (Schlosskirche) can be recognized. To approach the plaque for Albrecht Dürer pass through the archway and behind the church turn to the right.

The photographs were taken in April 2006 and November 2008 (total view).
