Die 2000-Lire-Banknote einer früheren Serie der italienischen Notenbank ziert ein Porträt des Mathematikers Galileo Galilei. Daneben sind Dom und schiefer Turm von Pisa zu erkennen. G. Galilei wurde 1564 in dieser Stadt geboren.

Die Rückseite der Banknote zeigt links eine Karte des Sternenhimmels, wobei die Sternbilder nur teilweise und nur als Figuren ausgeschmückt zu sehen sind. Daneben enthält diese Karte die Figuren und lateinischen Namen der Tierkreiszeichen sowie Darstellungen der damals bekannten Planeten. Jupiter ist mit sieben Monden dargestellt. Die Entdeckung der vier größten Jupitermonden wird G. Galilei zugeschrieben, weshalb sie auch die Galileischen Monde genannt werden.

Ferner sind auf der Rückseite eine moderne Sternwarte mit Radioteleskop und ein Fernrohr, mit dem G. Galilei beobachtet haben könnte, abgebildet.

The 2000 Lire banknote of an earlier series of the Italian National Bank shows a portrait of the mathematician Galileo Galilei. Moreover cathedral and the slanted tower of Pisa can be recognized. G. Galilei was born in this town in 1564.

The back side of the banknote shows on the left side a celestial chart representing partially the figures associated with the star constellations. Moreover the signs of the zodiac and their names in Latin are presented. The planets known at this time are sketched too. Jupiter is given with seven satellites. The discovery of the four biggest of them is imputed to G. Galilei. Consequently they are called the Galilean moons.

The back side contains also a picture of a modern observatory with a radio telescope and a telescope which may have been used by G. Galilei.
