Banknote mit dem Porträt von Carl Friedrich Gauß /
Banknote with a portrait of Carl Friedrich Gauß

10 DM Banknote

english Only a few years before the currency unit EURO was introduced in 15 states in Europe a new series of banknotes have been introduced in the Federal Republic of Germany. The 10 marks banknote shows a portrait of the mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauß. The function, whose graph is presented on the left of this portrait is well known in the literature as the Gaußian distribution. Moreover the banknote shows a historical view of the city of Göttingen.

On the back of this banknote (see below) a heliotrope is shown, which was developed by C. F. Gauß. Beside it there is a graph of a so-called triangle chain in the northern part of Germany. These triangle chains build some kind of skeleton of the german network of so-called topographical points of first order. Heliotrope as well as triangle chain point to contributions of C. F. Gauß to the ordnance survey of the kingdom Hannover.
