Monument for Josip Plemelj in Bled (Slovenia)

Mit dem oben abgebildeten Denkmal wird der Mathematiker Josip Plemelj in seiner Geburtsstadt Bled gewürdigt. Das Denkmal ist in einem kleinen Park jedoch unmittelbar an der Straße Prešernova cesta gelegen, durchaus in Sichtweite von seiner Villa. Die Inschrift des hohen Sockels, der eine Büste trägt, ist in slowenischer Sprache formuliert und kann wie nachstehend ins Deutsche übersetzt werden:

Die Besonderheit dieser Inschrift (siehe die weiter unten wiedergegebene Aufnahme) sind zwei Formeln, deren Bedeutung sich dem Betrachter nicht unmittelbar erschließt, zumal die einzelnen Symbole nicht erläutert und die Bedingungen unter denen diese Gleichungen gültig beziehungsweise anwendbar sind, nicht ausformuliert sind. Auf eine Darstellung der Thematik wird hier verzichtet, der Leser sei auf den Originalartikel [1, Formel 7] (siehe auch [2, Gleichung 2]) verwiesen.

The memorial shown above honours the mathematician Josip Plemelj in Bled, where he was born. This monument is located in a small park but close to the street Prešernova cesta and within the range of sight to his Villa. The inscription of the high socle, with a bust on its top, is in Slovenian and may be translated to English as follows:

The particularity of this inscription (confer the picture immediately above) are two formulas whose meaning is not immediately evident, especially because the symbols are not explained nor the conditions for application are mentioned. But here is not the place for discussion. The interested reader is referred to the original literature, namely [1, formula 7] (see also [2, equation 2]).
