Monument for Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi in Khiva (Uzbekistan)

In der Stadt Chiwa im westlichen Usbekistan ist Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi ein Denkmal gewidmet. Aus dessen Nachnamen wurde der Begriff "Algorithmus" abgeleitet, wobei der "Nachname" sich aus dem Hinweis auf seine Herkunft ableitet: "Der aus Choresmien". (Choresmien war ein Khanat, dessen Hoheitsbereich in den heutigen Staaten Turkmenistan und Usbekistan liegt; Chiwa war zeitweise Hauptstadt dieses Khanats.)

Auf dem ausgebreiteten Dokument, das Teil des Denkmals ist, sind eine Zeichnung und Text mit arabischen Schriftzeichen zu erkennen. Letzterer liest sich wie der Kurztitel eines seiner Hauptwerke hisab al-jabr wa'l-muqabala (siehe diesen englischsprachigen Wikipedia-Artikel), was vielleicht wie folgt übersetzt werden kann:

Man geht davon aus, dass der Begriff Algebra auf das im Titel verwendete Wort 'al-jabr' zurückgeht.

Das Denkmal steht außerhalb der Altstadt Chiwas - im Hintergrund ist die Stadtmauer zu erkennen - in der Nähe des westlichen Stadttores. Als Urheber des Kunstwerks werden auf der rechten Seite des Sockels

• der Bildhauer S. Ch. Babajan sowie die
• 'Architekten' S. M. Sutjagin und F. M. Aschrafi

genannt.

Am Seitenende wird ein Ausschnitt eines aus Kacheln gefertigten Stadtplans gezeigt, der in der Altstadt nahe des Stadttores nach Westen zu finden ist und die Lage des Denkmal (usbekisch: haykal) ausweist. Dabei ist zu beachten, das der Stadtplan so orientiert ist, dass oben in Richtung Ostnorddost zeigt.

In the city of Khiva in the western Uzbekistan there is a monument honouring Abu Ja'far Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi. From his name the concept "algorithm" is derived. But it should be mentioned that the name "al-Khwarizmi" is a hint on his origin, which means: "The one from Khoresmia". (Khwarezm or Chorasmia was a Khanate whose territory actually lies in the countries Turkmenistan und Uzbekistan; Khiwa was its capital for some period.)

The document as a part of the Memorial shows some graphics as well as some text given by Arabian letters. The latter reads like the shortened title of one of his main works hisab al-jabr wa'l-muqabala (confer to Wikipedia-Artikel):

Its guessed that the concept Algebra is derived from the word 'al-jabr' which is part of the title.

The monument is located outside of the ancient city of Khiva but near the western town-gate. In the background the city-wall can be recognized. The originaters of this monument are mentioned on the right face of the base, namely

• the sculptor S. Ch. Babajan as well as the
• 'architects' S. M. Sutjagin and F. M. Aschrafi.

Below a section of a map of the ancient part of Khiva ist shown. It shows the situation arround the monument (usbek: haykal). This city map is manufactured of ceramic tiles and may be found also near the western town-gate. One must have in mind that the map is oriented that upside shows in direction East-northeast.
