Gedenkstein auf dem Großen Inselsberg im Thüringer Wald (Deutschland) /

Auf dem Gipfel des Großen Inselsberg im Thüringer Wald ist der trigonometrische Punkt mit einem Gedenkstein versehen worden. Die auf zwei Seiten des Marmorblocks eingravierte Inschrift erwähnt auch die Mathematiker Carl Friedrich Gauß, Christian Ludwig Gerling und den Geodäten Peter Andreas Hansen. Dabei ist anzumerken, dass auch die beiden erstgenannten Persönlichkeiten ebenfalls auch in der Geodäsie tätig waren. Die Inschrift besitzt in Gänze folgenden Wortlaut:

Heutzutage mutet die Liste der im Text benannten Staaten fremdartig an. Die Kleinstaaterei auf dem Gebiet des Deutschen Bundes hat man auch als Flickenteppich bezeichnet.

On the mountain Großer Inselsberg's top the triangulation point was equipped with a memorial stone. The inscription on two faces of the marble block also mentions the mathematicians Carl Friedrich Gauß, Christian Ludwig Gerling and the geodesist Peter Andreas Hansen. But it should be mentioned that the two afore-said personages also have been working as geodesists. The inscription reads like:

This text is followed by the names of two professional associations, the date of erection, namely June 1995 and an acknowledgement for the permission.

Nowadays the list of states mentioned in this text looks very strange. But Germany was formerly compared with a Flickenteppich, which means "patchwork carpet" (cf. the map of the German Confederation). For more details see the article on the German Confederation.
