The grave of Ferdinand von Lindemann and his wife is located within the grave area 43 of the so-called Waldfriedhof (old part) in the South of Munich. It is worth to mention that amongst the inscription
University professor Dr. Ferdinand von Lindemann * April 12th, 1852 + March 6th, 1939 Authoress Lisbeth von Lindemann née Nüssner * July 22nd, 1861 + February 28th, 1936 |
also contains a graphics showing the contours of a square and a circle with the Greek letter π. This is a hint for the proof that π is a transcendental number. This theorem was proved by Ferdinand von Lindemann. From this it follows that the quadrature of a circle by ruler and compasses is not possible with a finite amount of steps.
The photograph was taken in October 2005.
