Der Tropische Garten MONTE PALACE in Monte - einem Vorort von Funchal (Madeira) - enthät eine Sammlung von Kachelbildern aus der Zeit vom 15. bis zum 20. Jahrhundert. Ein Kachelbild dieser zusammengetragenen Kollektion zeigt eine Allegorie der Mathematik, das weiter unten auf dieser Seite auch vollständig wiedergegeben ist.

Auf die Wissenschaft Mathematik weisen der Zirkel und die geometrischen Figuren links von den beiden Personen hin sowie das kugelförmige Instrument links oben im Bild, das ein Planetenmodell darstellen könnte.

The Tropical Garden MONTE PALACE in Monte - a suburb of Funchal (Madeira) - contains a collection of pictures of ceramic tiles from the period of 15. up to the 20. century. One such a picture show an allegory of mathematics which is also completely presented below on this page.

The following items of the picture refer to mathematics: A pair of compasses, geometric figures on the left, and an instrument in the left upper part possibly showing a model of planet orbits.

Die oben vorgestellte Keramik ist Teil einer Serie von drei Kachelbildern (siehe unten). Sie wird links flankiert von einer Allegorie der Geographie und rechts von einem Kachelbild die Malerei symbolisierend. Leider gab es zu diesen Keramiken keine Hinweistafeln, wie für viele der anderen Kachelbilder, so dass über den Zeitpunkt und Ort deren Erstellung hier keine Aussagen möglich sind.

Kachelbilder haben in Portugal eine lange Tradition. Doch auch noch heute begegnet man Ihnen (nicht nur) im Straßenbild von Funchal, überwiegend an historischen Gebäuden und Kirchen.

Die Aufnahmen wurde im Oktober 2004 gemacht.

The picture presented and described above is part of a series of three ceramic pictures (see below). On its left there is an allegory of geography and on the right another ceramic symbolizing painting. Unfortunately there are no signboards, like for other ceramics, mentioning time and location of the preparation of these pictures.

Pictures build with ceramic tiles have a long tradition in Portugal. Also nowadays one may see them (not only) in Funchal, especially at historic buildings and churches.

The photographs were taken in October 2004.
